The People RIse Up

There have been coordinated nationwide peaceful protests at 9pm nightly, including here in Didim. We clearly heard the crowds chanting while chowing down on the terrace. In the face of the media's shameful coverage ban, the people of Turkey have turned in droves to social media. In response to all the negative publicity internationally, PM Erdogan refers to Facebook and Twitter as "the new menace". Party members have vowed to take Twitter to court. For what? It's only defamation of character when the allegations are false.

Imagine the mayor of Ottawa demanding that civil servant protesters identify themselves and apologize else they'll be booted out of their jobs. This is the threat facing Ankara government workers who have thrown their weight behind the protests. The government - via the police - want to identify high school student protesters to blacklist them. We're talking 14-15 year old kids. Civil liberties are being trampled on everywhere you look. No wonder the people are rising up. And these are indeed regular everyday folks like you and I, not extremists and looters as the PM would have you believe.
