A curious thing about Didim: pigeons are nonexistent. Doves have filled the gap, serenading residents with their signature "who, who". A town full of avian philosophers?
"Nazars" are everywhere. They hang off car bumpers and mirrors, they adorn entranceways and watch the comings and goings of the towns folk. These are charms displayed to ward off the "evil eye". Seems they are meant to act as a magnet of malevolent forces which are then trapped inside the amulet. If one such amulet should shatter, it is said that the owner was surrounded by such a wallop of negative energy that it overwhelmed the amulet. Better the charm than the owner, I say. In Cappadocia is a tree covered in nazars much in the way of Christmas ornaments.
